Curve Segments

Postby RA Smith National » Thu May 03, 2012 7:13 am

I am trying to analyze a corridor with 14 horizontal curves that are each under 0.1mile. The majority of these horizontal curves are connected with short tangent sections averaging 0.25 miles. Do each of these curves need to be considered a new segment, or is there guidance on how to simplify the analysis? Is it acceptable to group a horizontal curve with the short adjacent tangent section?

Thanks,
Laura

Laura,

I assume that you are analyzing a rural 2-lane highway, as that is the only facility type for which the HSM predictive method considers horizontal curves. Yes, each horizontal curve must be considered a new segment, and you should not group a horizontal curve with the short adjacent tangent section.

Are you using a tool (software, spreadsheet, etc.) to do the analysis?
